Feeling like you just need to know how to start? Or curious about how to start a WordPress blog?
We know how you feel! The beginning of so many good things can involve a lot of guesswork and finger-crossing. We’re here to hand over the blueprint to blogging.
Here you’ll find a simple, step-by-step (just three!) outline of how to get your blog setup from hosting to domain and on to design.
Let’s get started.
This tutorial will walk you through three easy steps (promise-cross-our-heart they really are easy!) complete with screenshots to create the self-hosted WordPress blog of your dreams. Follow the steps and by the end, you’ll have your own beautiful blog, on your own domain, with style and stories to share with the rest of the world. Oh—and some of these links are affiliate links, which means we get a small kick-back, but we wouldn’t lead you astray: these are the trusted tools we use in our very own business.
Pro-tip: Open up a couple windows in your browser and set things up side by side if you can. Or, pull out your iPad or husband or bestie’s computer and walk through each step in real time. We promise you’ll be done before you can finish your coffee or glass of wine.
First thing’s first, in case you’re confused about self-hosted WordPress.org vs. WordPress.com? Check out this post! It’ll clear things up.
Before you start: Hosting (or, Step 0)
We’ve tried several hosting companies. They’ve all got a few differences here and there, but the one that’s been our favorite by far? Bluehost, hands-down.
Why we love it:
- Get user-friendly design that’s super easy for finding what you’re looking for—no digging around searching for what you want.
- Enjoy a super responsive customer service team. You can call or chat 24/7 if you’re stuck on something and they’ll help you figure it out! Plus, their support articles are really easy to follow.
- Last, but certainly not least, we really love their affordable pricing—you can’t beat $3.95/mo! I mean, that’s less than most of Kelsey’s Starbucks orders.
Step 1: Choose your domain and hosting
One of the only not-so-easy pieces can be deciding on a name for your blog, we know—but once you’ve got that, go to Bluehost and click on the green “Get Started Now” button.
Select which hosting plan you’d like. You can always upgrade later if your needs change, but the $3.95 basic plan is what most beginners start out with.
→ HOSTING: (noun) the home for your blog on the web. Sort of like your locker in the hallways of your high school — ahh don’t we all remember memorizing that combo lock code freshman year?
Next, check to see if your domain is available. Bluehost gives you a free domain with your hosting plan. Or, use your existing domain. (A few hints, you’ll want to be sure your blog name looks good all squished together to form your domain, also you may want to have a “short name” for your domain if your blog name is on the longer side.)
→ DOMAIN: (noun) the address for your blog. The juicy bit that goes between www. and .com.
Follow the steps provided by Bluehost and you’ll have hosting!
Step 2: Install WordPress on Bluehost
Now that you have your domain and hosting through Bluehost, you can install WordPress. Thankfully, they’ve made it super simple with a one-click-install feature.
→ INSTALL: (verb) Don’t worry, this sounds much more serious than it is — think of WordPress as an app within your Bluehost. Similar to, say, Instagram on your iPhone.
To install WordPress, log in to your Bluehost account and click on the hosting tab in the top left.
Scroll down the page to the website section and click on install WordPress. (This is the part where you can start planning what to do later. Because you’ll be done with this in no time.)
Your page will navigate to a new one where you’ll select options for installing WordPress. First, click on the green install button on the right.
Next, select your domain name from the drop down menu and leave the directory empty. Click check domain.
Check show advanced options and you’ll see your site name and your username and password. Name your site and fill in your username and password. Also, make sure to check Automatically create a new database for this installation. Once you accept the terms and conditions you can install WordPress onto your domain!
And that’s it!

Once Bluehost finishes installing WordPress, you’ll be ready to use your WordPress dashboard. To find it you can go to your URL/wp-admin like this: http://yourdomain.com/wp-admin
→ DASHBOARD: (noun) This is like your home base for your WordPress site, the backend area where you’ll login to tweak things and publish content. Think of it as your office desk, with your paper planner, iPhone, and laptop all perfectly positioned to start your day.
Keep this URL and your credentials handy so you can log into WordPress easily. Pretty simple, huh?
Step 3: Style your blog and make it yours
So, now you’ve got the blank slate—studs and drywall, if you will. It’s time for the finishes that truly make your online space into a home.
