Adding a featured image is essential to blogging correctly with WordPress. A featured image is the image that any plugins or post excerpts will use.
- A slider will use your featured image
- If you set a read more button (with our new theme releases), this is the image that will display before your read more button
- Featured/popular/recent/category post plugins will use this image
It’s a good practice to get into so if down the road, you want to add extra features to your blog or redesign it, you will not have to go back and set featured image for every single post. It will be a seamless process!
When you set a featured image, it will not be added to your post content automatically. If you’d like your featured image to display in your post content, then you will still need to add it to your post content. Also, your featured image can be something totally different. Maybe you’d like all of your posts to display an image with a certain text style before your read more button.
Or maybe your slider plugin recommends a certain size, so you’ll set your featured image to be a size of 1000 x 450, but you don’t have to include this shortened size within your post.
Here’s how to set your featured image:
When you are editing your post, scroll down on the right hand side of your screen. Under the tags section, you will see the featured image section. Simply click the “Set Featured Image” link and select or upload your featured image in your Media folder. That’s it!
